Manual Excerpt

To make your blog looks better, you need to include a manual excerpt for every post (like my blog). You can add that while editing or adding new post. You can, however, leave your excerpt empty and wordpress will automatically make an excerpt for you, but all HTML tags would be auto removed.

How often we talk about wordpress themes, probably this is the first need of any blogger who start with WordPress blogs. Most of new blogger who start with wordpress, use free WordPress theme, thinking why to pay for premium wordpress theme, when they can get it for free. Even I started with some free WordPress themes for first 6 months, and later on settle down with premium wordpress theme by Pagelines.

I know it can be a good point of debate between free vs paid wordpress theme, and obviously I would like to know your opinion on it.

Now let me give some of the points, what I like the most about free WordPress theme is its free and that’s the only thing which I like about them. Why to pay one time 20-50$ when you can get some thing for free?. This is what I used to think when I started with wordpress blog and like every one landed with some nice free WordPress theme.

Though later on I realize my mistakes and problem faced with free wordpress theme.

Support

After WordPress upgrade, designer was not keen to make any update on theme as its was free and theme was not compatible with latest wordpress. I had two choices change the theme or downgrade the wordpress version. Obviously I don’t want to put my blog in security risk by downgrading the version.

SEO

I know for new bloggers SEO is a myth and even at the starting days of my blogging, SEO was rocket science for me. Though once I realized the mistakes I have made in terms of meta tags, keywords I was taken back. I know this has nothing to do with theme, wait! Theme also play a great role to strength the structure of your blog, which I realized once I started using a Pagelines Premium Theme.

Features

Free themes has limited no. of features and if you want to see particular feature, it will be difficult to get until unless theme developer is willing to provide free support or if you are personally in touch with theme developer.

Encrypted links

This is the first and last thing I hate about free wordpress themes, since most of them now are making the footer encrypted and selling those links. This has a very bad impact on SEO of your blog and why do you want to encrypt your footer, I’m sure if not now, later on you would like to add more features in your Footer of the theme. Just for the info, a nice footer has a great advantage on SEO of your blog, if you use it wisely.

Though for new bloggers who can’t spend 20$ for themes , free theme is the way to go, but once your blog start getting momentum. I will advice switch over to any best possible premium themes.

We actually stopped designing new website for 2-years because just about everyone we were designing websites for couldn’t keep it updated. They just didn’t have anyone on staff that could make updates to the content or make changes to the “look” of the site.

When we made the switch to WordPress – that’s when we saw that with WordPress’ Admin Panel, anyone that wants to maintain their own website can.

Most business people know the old “Product Rule”: a.) You can have the very best product, b.) of the highest quality, and c.) the lowest price: now pick two of the three. Just like, for example, BMW can’t produce the best car with the best components AND offer the lowest price of any car on the market and still make a profit. But they can make a great car with great components, but they have no choice about their cars being more expensive than other cars.

Everyone has to decide what type of service they will offer.

In our case, we decided to offer a great product with great service – but our price isn’t the lowest. It wasn’t always like this – but with 25 years experience – you tend to develop a great deal of confidence in your capabilities.

While our customer’s might like us to charge less, it’s more important to them that we “just take handle it.” They don’t want to have to worry about the job getting done right and on-time.

So if we are going to take on a job, we want to make sure that what we are doing is going to work for our customer – we don’t set up a website unless we know that there is a process in place for the website to get updated – we don’t really care who does the updating – it’s either the customer or us – but someone has to do it. Otherwise we have charged our customer for a service that we know isn’t going to get used properly in the long-run and we just don’t want to take on jobs like that.
